Where we are licensed, and who regulates us

Insurance is licensed and rated state by state. Availability, forms, endorsements and price all change at the state line, and this page says exactly how.

The schedule

A licence to write in a state is not the same as every line being available there. Where the schedule says personal lines, we do not currently write business owner policies in that state, and an agent will tell you so rather than quoting something we cannot bind.

No certificate of authority numbers appear on this page. A real carrier would print one per state and you could look each one up. Ironclad Mutual is a demonstration brand, and an invented number in the exact format a state issues is not safe for being invented — it can collide with a working carrier's. The regulator names below are real, and they are the part of this table you can actually use.

Why the same policy costs different money in Toledo and in Erie

Every rate a carrier charges in the United States is filed with, and in most cases approved by, the state regulator. So is every policy form and every endorsement. Two households with identical risk profiles thirty miles apart across a state line can be quoted very different numbers, and neither quote is wrong.

On top of the filed rate, the loss environment genuinely differs. Lake effect snow, hail frequency, sewer backup exposure in older housing stock, litigation climate and uninsured motorist rates all vary by state and by county. That is what the ZIP code question on the quote form is actually for.

Two words that decide what you actually own.

Almost every argument a US policyholder loses starts with one of these. Both are questions about who is standing behind the paper, and both have a plain answer.

Admitted or surplus lines?

YouCarrierGuaranty fundFiled forms, filed rates
  • Policy forms and rates are filed with, and in most states approved by, the department of insurance.
  • Backed by the state guaranty association: if the carrier becomes insolvent, covered claims are paid up to the state statutory cap.
  • Your complaint goes to the state department of insurance, and it counts in the NAIC complaint index.
  • Rate changes require a filing, so they are slower and more visible.

Ironclad Mutual writes admitted business only, in all fourteen states on the schedule. If a risk cannot be written on an admitted form, an agent will say so and point you at a surplus lines broker rather than quoting something we cannot bind.

Agent or broker? Who do they act for?

YouAgentCarrierActs for the insurer
  • Holds an appointment from one or more carriers and can bind coverage on their behalf.
  • In law, the agent is the insurer’s representative. What you tell the agent, you have told the carrier.
  • A captive agent sells one carrier. An independent agent holds appointments with several.
  • Paid a commission by the carrier, disclosed on request in every state we write in.

Everyone listed on our agents page is an appointed agent of Ironclad Mutual and acts for Ironclad Mutual, not for you. That is a real legal difference, and you should know which one you are speaking to before you disclose anything.

Four steps, about sixty seconds, and no obligation. An agent reads every line together so the limits actually meet.
